"Like all High/Scope programs, the Infant-Toddler Curriculum is based on the principle that children learn best through direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas. During this active learning process infants and toddlers are encouraged to discover the world around them by exploring and playing. Learning and development are anchored by long-term, trusting relationships with caregivers/teachers who are close at hand to support the children as they play. Adults scaffold further learning as they interact with children throughout the day. The educational content of High/Scope infant-toddler program is built around 41 key experiences in 10 curriculum content areas. The key experiences are early childhood milestones that guide caregivers/teachers as they play and assess learning experiences and interact with children to support learning."*

Preschool

"Active learning-whether planned by adults or initiated by children-is the central element of the High/Scope Preschool Curriculum. Children learn through direct, hands on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas. Trained teachers who understand child development and how to scaffold the important areas of learning in the preschool years offer guidance and support. In the High/Scope approach teachers and children are active partners in the learning process. This balanced approach to adult-child interaction- also called intentional teaching-is critical to the effectiveness of the program. It includes techniques for encouraging learning in specific content areas as well as strategies for helping children resolve conflict."* The educational content of High/Scope Preschool programs is built around 58 key developmental indicators in five curriculum content areas. These areas of academic and social development advocated by the National Education Goals Panel are Language and literacy, Mathematics and Science, Social Skills, and the Arts.

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten Program meets the needs of those children who will be 5 years old by December 31. The kindergarten Program offers a curriculum for children who have completed a 4-year-old Pre-K program. The program utilizes a whole literature approach including phonics, offering children integrated learning experiences in language, reading, math, science, social studies and the arts. Readiness for reading is developed through rich language experiences and exposure to numerous literature based activities. Following the High/Scope framework, hands on learning activities will enhance the older preschool child's educational needs.

Kindergarten Enrichment

The Kindergarten Enrichment Program is designed to compliment the child's kindergarten experience by offering opportunities to develop flexible thinking, solve problems, reinforce literacy and math skills, and to learn through meaningful and interesting activities, thereby increasing a solid sense of their own competence.

Role of the Teacher

"In the High/Scope curriculum, the role of the teacher is to support and extend children's learning by listening, asking open-ended questions, engaging in conversations, and challenging children to explain their thinking. High/Scope is neither a laissez-faire model in which children discover everything on their own nor an authoritarian one in which adults direct all the learning."* High/Scope is an inquiry based curriculum where adults encourage children's independence and initiative.
